The Cuban American blogger who in the early 2000’s rattled the entertainment world with his celebrity gossip blog Perezhilton.com and transformed it to become one of the most visited websites on the Internet to date, has always been known to support independent artists. By being amongst the first—if not “the first”, media outlet to mention artists such as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Amy Winehouse, he has been partially credited for also launching music careers, such that now Mario Armando Lavandeira, Jr., known to you and I as Perez Hilton, is trying on another hat for size.
We’re not talking fedoras or fabulous sun hats with big brims. We’re talking about Perez trying on the hat of releasing albums. On August 7, 2012 through the Opus Label, Perez will launch “Pop Up! #1”, a music compilation of what he considers to be the music you should be listening to now.
The album includes 14 of Perez’s favorite artists, among them Kerli, Fedez and Capital Cities. The album will be available on iTunes, Best Buy and Target where fans will also have the opportunity to purchase any of the “Perez Hilton Music Tee Series” collection of t-shirts and tank tops with album-inspired artwork on the front. Shirts are available for purchase online as well.
We caught up with the 34-year-old gossip guru to talk about “Pop Up! #1” and of course we couldn’t help but ask him a random thing or two to get you to know more about this successful persona.
What criteria did you follow when selecting the artists and songs for your first comp album?
I wanted fun, up-tempo songs that would be perfect for someone’s gym playlist or party mix! If I could help turn on people to great new music and encourage them to be healthy and have fun, then that was just twice as nice!
As a music librarian, did you put much thought into the order of tracks?
I absolutely played around with the track listing a lot. I wanted to take people on a journey and I think the finished product is a very enjoyable trip!
Which artists on the album do you see gaining mainstream popularity soon after the album release?
Hopefully VanJess or Kat Graham. They have a lot of mainstream potential.
Is there a “Pop Up! #2″ in the works?
If the first one is successful, I would definitely love to do another!
Who are your top three best teen fashion icons and why?
Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift because each one of them has a very unique sense of style. They’re each young, age-appropriate and, most importantly, relatable!
What were some of the obstacles you faced as a teenager and how did you over come them?
The biggest obstacle I overcame was the death of my father as a young teen. I overcame that by burying myself in school. Being a nerd paid off!
‘Any advice for your young fans?
Life is hard but we get through it. Don’t give up! Don’t give in to cynicism! Dream big! Aim high!
Here’s a sneak peek into one of the artists, My Name Is Kay, performing “Diddy Dum” which is featured on Perez’s “Pop #1”. Not bas to include in your Quinceanera music playlist, right?
