Let your Imagination Choose your Cake

Jose Francisco Sanchez

With so many designs, flavors, and colors to choose from, you can have the best Quince cake ever to impress your guests.

There is nothing more significant than celebrating a birthday with a cake, and your quinceañera is no exception. It all begins with presentation. Given that the cake usually takes a special place and is in everyone’s view, make sure to choose one that complements your party’s theme.

Compared to wedding cakes, which are usually white, quinceañera cakes can have different shapes and colors. For example, if your party’s theme has to do with fairytale princesses, then you can have your cake shaped like Cinderella’s carriage or even a castle. If you have a more conventional theme, then you can choose a three or four layer, round or square cake, or a traditional cake made in a large sheet, which supports two or three smaller layers propped up by round blocks. There are also cakes that are shaped like hearts, stars, and other original shapes. The choice is yours!

When it comes to the cake’s decoration and color, you have many options as well: pink, purple, orange, yellow, white, etc. Just remember that whatever color you choose, it should match the tones of your dress and dominant motifs.

Soft tones are usually used during spring and summer, while burgundy and emerald green are more popular in the fall and winter seasons.

Cake Decor

The cake’s decoration is also important if you want it to be appreciated for its own merits. Cakes are normally decorated with shapes and borders created with whipped cream, but nowadays you can decorate them with fresh flowers, fruit, or several accessories such as butterflies, stars, seashells, ribbons, musical notes, or feathers.

The same goes for the decoration on the cake’s topmost surface. You have many options here, one of the most popular being a large metallic or diamond-decorated number 15. Other options include a tiara, exactly like the one you will wear during the celebration, a doll dressed with the same attire as yours, or any element that identifies you. If you like music, for example, you can decorate it with a musical note.

When it comes to flavor, choose a cake that you like but avoid extreme flavors, since your guests might not like it as much as you do. It’s best to opt for mild flavors and avoid an overly sweet cake. The most popular is a tres leches cake, topped with whipped cream and filled with cut fruit. However, there are other flavors to choose from including vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, carrot, lemon, and orange, among others. You can also choose traditional fillings like strawberry and chocolate or more sophisticated ones like almond cream, cream cheese, mango cream, and piña colada, among others.

The frosting is usually composed of two ingredients: meringue and whipped cream. The latter is less sweet and has a smoother taste, but is a bit pricier. If the meringue is made right and is of good quality, it will make your guests’ mouths water.

The Final Decision

Keep in mind that you have to order your cake at least two months in advance. Before placing your order, be sure to visit bakeries, ask for a catalog, and taste some of the cakes you like most. Once you have made your decision, talk to your godparent and let him/her know about your choice.

Although you don’t have to worry about last-minute details such as placing the order and making the payment, ask your godparent to make sure that the cake is delivered at the right place and time. Usually, the cake is placed on one of the main tables before the guests begin to arrive.

We must not forget an important element to cut and serve the cake: the knife and server, a set of utensils specially designed and decorated for this purpose.

Believe it or not, you can also have a godparent for this feature, which is one of the most inexpensive items in the entire celebration, ranging from $25 to $85.

The set is decorated with ribbons and other motifs according to the color of your dress. Then, it is placed on a silver platter or any other foiled tray and wrapped in cellophane. If you want the items to be engraved with your name, you will have to pay a slightly higher price.
