The Ultimate Curly Hair Routine for Beginners

Yoana Estrada

Hi, curl friends! Having curly hair can be both a blessing and a curse.

There are days when our curls can look absolutely bomb and other days where we just want to give up and throw it in a bun! We need to educate every time! It’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed with all the curly hair products and advice that is out there. So, let’s go back to the basics with a simple and easy-to-follow curly girl method. The steps go as follows; deep condition, shampoo, conditioner, detangle, styler, and plopping.

Deep Condition

There is no such thing as too much conditioner when it comes to curly hair! Using a deep conditioner will help your hair become stronger and healthier. A deep conditioner is different from a normal conditioner because it is thicker and was made to hydrate and repair dry hair. Adding moisture to your hair is the trick for beautiful healthy-looking curls.

Washing Your Curls

When washing your hair it’s important to be gentle and massage the shampoo into your scalp.  Using a scalp massager can also help to distribute the product evenly. Remember to focus the product on your scalp and let the shampoo slip down on its own to the bottom.

Squish To Condish

Conditioner is a curly girl’s best friend. When applying conditioner it’s important to squish to condish! All this means is to flip your hair over and squish your curls towards your scalp. This is also the perfect time to detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb, Denman brush, or your fingers.

Curl Defining Moment

Curl-defining creams and gels are used to lock your curls in and rid them of frizz! These are best applied to your hair right after the shower while it is still wet. Remember to evenly rake through your hair and use the squish method to apply these products.

Plop it Like it’s Hot

You’re going to want to plop your hair once you’ve placed the products throughout your wet hair. After this, you can flip your head upside down and wrap a cotton t-shirt around your head. This will help to add volume and reduce frizz.
