Ruben Espinoza, choreographer and co-founder of Cyclo Dance Group, breaks it down for you..

If you’re wondering how to choreograph your own Quince surprise dance, a great place to start is by getting inspired by the dance moves from some of your favorite artists. And although most of the artists we see on music videos have been dancing for many years, Ruben Espinoza, choreographer and co-founder of Cyclo Dance Group in Los Angeles, assures you that anyone can memorize choreography like a professional by simply following a few basic steps.

“It all begins by breaking the dance down into small steps in order to arrive to a grand finale,” he states. Once you have the routine memorized, the young dancer suggests to practice them without looking at the floor, which is a common mistake made by many. A helpful tip for this is to coordinate your eyesight with your movements.

The next step would be to practice in front of a mirror so you can concentrate on your gracefulness and watch yourself in action. Doing so will make it easier for you to see any mistakes or become aware of facial expressions that you may make. “It would be a good idea to then invite some friends and family to see you practice,” he adds. “There is a great difference between dancing alone and dancing in front of people and this exercise will make you less nervous for your actual Quinceañera surprise dance.”

Practicing with your Quince dress on, or at least with the hoopskirt and your heels is another tip that can enhance your skills on the dance floor. If possible, Ruben also suggests practicing at the actual venue so that you can become familiar with the area and space.

“I would also advise Quinceañeras to practice at least twice a week beginning two months prior to the big day,” he says. “This way, the Quinceañera will have enough time to memorize the entire choreography.”

During the grand performance of your Quinceañera, Ruben says that you should find a focal point to focus on until you feel confident enough to look out towards your audience. But most importantly, he urges you to “Have fun!” No matter how complicated the choreography is or how nervous you’re feeling, remember that in order to have a great dance routine, you must have fun doing it because this will motivate your guests to do the same and your Quince will become a memorable event.”
