Looking back at Shakira’s amazing 2011

ShakiraHer tribute at the Latin Grammys and her recent star on Hollywood’s Hall of Fame marked a great 2011 year for the Colombian artist.

Without a doubt, 2011 was a great year for Shakira. Being honored by her peers at the Latin Grammys in Las Vegas and starring on the Hall of Fame, at age 34 she is at another level.

The Colombian artist was chosen by The Latin Recording Academy as the Person of the Year. Surrounded by her parents and Latin musicians, the singer could not hold back tears due to such praise.

While awarding Shakira, Mark Anthony was also responsible for the most passionate speech of the night: “I know your tenacity and brilliance. I am so overwhelmed with the situation that I’d rather sing,” he stated just before hugging the star of the night at the Mandalay Casino in Las Vegas.

Shakira thanked her father William Mebarak and dedicated him a version of ‘Es mi niña bonita’, then added: “This tribute is for all my efforts in my career. I’m honored, not only by the fact of being surrounded by family and friends, but also colleagues, people who understand what I do and who have come here to give me love,”

She said her tribute has helped her renew her vows with music, aspirations as well as her career and emotions. After 2 hours of duets and different versions of her most famous songs, she ended the night with a salsa song from her homeland, Barranquilla.

Natalia Jimenez and Alejandra Guzman were the first to take over the stage, performing her first hit, ‘Ciega, sordomuda.’ Jorge Drexler did a rendition of ‘Devoción’ which was dedicated to a friend both singers have in common, Gustavo Cerati. Gilberto Santa Rosa sang ‘La Tortura’ and shared some words for the singer: “Your talent makes you great, but your heart makes you unique, the first time I saw you perform live in Puerto Rico I became blind and deaf mute”, this in reference to her song ‘Ciega, sordomuda’.

Alex Syntec, Pepe Aguilar, Franco de Vita and Vicentico from Los Fabulosos Cadillac along with Estopa, are a few of the musicians who participated on this tribute.
